Although most gold-seekers never made it to the gold fields, those who did needed a crash course in gold mining. Where would they learn? What kind of people survived the hazards of travel and became miners? Could you get rich from gold mining without actually traveling to a gold field?

Let's explore what it was like to actually mine for gold during the Alaska gold rush era (1880-1914). We will piece together stories from a variety of historic primary sources.
