Alaska State Library and Alaska State Archives:
Rights Statement, Copyright Notice & Disclaimer

Alaska State Library’s and Alaska State Archives' images in Alaska’s Digital Archives may be printed or downloaded by individuals, schools or libraries for personal use, study, research or classroom teaching without permission. Any fair use, as defined by copyright law, is acceptable.

Permission to reproduce these images in any other form must be obtained in writing (see links to permission & order forms below) from the Alaska State Library or Alaska State Archives. Includes but is not limited to: electronic or paper publishing, World Wide Web sites, film, DVD, CD, video, exhibits, interior design, product presentation or advertising. Applicant is solely responsible for providing correct identifiers. Refunds will not be given for incorrect images supplied because of incorrect identifiers.

The Alaska State Library and Alaska State Archives reserves the right to refuse an application if it is apparent that the proposed use would violate copyright law or compromise the authenticity of the material as an historical document.

Applicants must assume full responsibility for questions of potential copyright violation in their use of Alaska State Library’s and Alaska State Archives' digital images.

Copyright of historical archival collections may be difficult or impossible to determine. The Alaska State Library would like to hear from any copyright owners who are not properly identified in Alaska’s Digital Archives.

Government Documents

The government documents posted to this site are from a variety of sources. Generally, US federal documents are also in the domain. State and local governments may retain copyright of their publications. If a private entity creates a document on behalf of any level of government, that individual or organization may retain copyright.

If you determine that a document may fall under copyright, you may need to contact the originating agency or the individual or organization that created it in order to obtain permission to use the document in excess of fair use or other exceptions allowed by the law.

Intellectual Property and Cultural Knowledge

The Alaska State Libraries, Archives and Museums recognize that some materials may have special significance for Alaska Native communities and other cultural groups within Alaska. Researchers are encouraged to be aware of the cultural or intellectual property rights that pertain to some aspects of traditional knowledge.

Researchers should also be aware of, and educate themselves on, the various state, national, and international efforts to protect the cultural and intellectual property rights of Indigenous Peoples such as the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (Articles 11 and 31) and the Alaska Native Knowledge Network’s Guidelines for Respecting Cultural Knowledge.

Permission & Order Forms for Alaska's Digital Archives Photos

Note: Alaska’s Digital Archives is a consortium of several different Alaskan institutions. Alaska State Library only handles requests for Alaska State Libraries, Archives and Museums collections.

Use Form

Download from Web low-resolution 72dpi jpeg (Free) – You will click on the image and download it to your computer yourself. This may be done from any computer with Internet access to Alaska’s Digital Archives. Please fill out and submit the Use Form.

Download Lo-Res Use form (DOC)

High Resolution Order

High-resolution order form ($30 fee prepayment required before delivery) – This requires the Alaska State Library to build and deliver links to the high-resolution files (600 dpi).

Please note it may take up to two weeks to process your request, but the average is usually less than that.

Note: Prepayment is required for orders involving service fees. Payment can be made by check or by credit card through the State’s payment processor. In the case of credit card payments, you will receive an invoice from them. Do not put credit card information on the form.

Requesting Non-digitized Photos

If you are requesting a photo from the Alaska State Library or Alaska State Archives that is not included in the Digital Archives, you need to start the request process by email or by calling 465.2925. Please include the name of the image and its corresponding number. Note: if image identifier is not provided, a fee for staff research may be added.
